Carlos Valerio received $100,000 toward the down payment on his first home through Bronx NHS—turning the dream of homeownership into a reality.
News 12 is partnering with Bronx Neighborhood Housing Services (Bronx NHS) for its Rebuilding the Bronx series beginning in 2026, highlighting programs that help Bronx residents access stable, affordable homeownership. The nonprofit offers forgivable loans, free tax preparation, and a range of housing services designed to support low- and moderate-income families.

The first story of the year features Carlos Valerio, a Bronx resident who received $100,000 through Bronx NHS to help purchase his first home. Like many New Yorkers, Valerio once believed homeownership was out of reach due to rising costs. After years of renting and a failed attempt to buy a condominium, he began searching for guidance—and found Bronx NHS.
Through the organization’s first-time homebuyer program, Valerio participated in a year of classes and training that helped him understand the homebuying process and prepare financially. In June 2024, he began orientation, and by the end of the program, he was awarded a $100,000 grant to use toward his down payment.
According to Gladstone Johnson, Executive Director of Bronx NHS, the program is designed to bridge a critical gap. With many Bronx homes now valued between $600,000 and $800,000, qualifying for a mortgage is often impossible without support. Bronx NHS screens applicants carefully and provides resources that make homeownership achievable.
